Throughout Loeys' life, she was always creating things with her hands. Her four older siblings kept her supplied with ideas and inspiration, her parents added the physical products. Sewing our own clothes was a family activity in Spokane. In school, she took many craft type classes, especially pottery. After college, Loey worked in San Francisco where she continually experienced various craft techniques. After working in Norway, she taught school until she married and then had 4 active children. An annual art class at a junior college was a "night out". Family life included many crafty projects.
When the kids left home, Loey took a turn in life (as she moved into her 50's) when she took some watercolor classes. THIS WAS IT! First she entered some competitions, which gave her confidence. From there she entered fairs, from San Francisco to Seattle. She joined an art group in San Francisco of about 24-40 superior artists that displayed their work in the parks, mainly Union Square. With that, she was able to totally support herself. She also showed in several small art galleries, and continued the shows in Salem, Bellevue, and the eastern Sierras.
Loey always enjoys an annual "vacation" from painting by doing crafty things - knitting hats and scarfs for the local shows, painting stuffed character dolls, fused glass chimes, stringing Stravinsky crystals, and jewelry. But she gets the most excieted about paints and colors. Her favorite way to work is meeting a special need for a home or decorator. Now in 2011 Loey is creating fabric paintings, the small ones being adheared to cigar boxes.
In 2005 Loey moved to Mammoth Lakes in the eastern Sierras to be near some of her family. She is surrounded with spectacular beauty. At 81, she still shows with the local art group, and paints her largest works. She just remodeled a shop in her home, in the suburb of Crowley Lake, for working and display .
