Soft Wall Hangings - new 2011
Eastern Sierra & Yosemite / Mammoth Lakes

To make these wall hangings, I first start with a view to represent. After choosing a denim fabric or other heavy fabric, I wade into my 60 year collection of fabrics and bags of scraps looking for the colors and textures to use for the collage.  The next step is to heat- set a double sided webbing on the backs of these pieces. By freehand, I cut the shapes  wanted, starting at the top of the design. These shapes are peeled and pinned on the base.  When the pins get too crowded, the design is heat set.  Then layer #2 is started.  If I am satisfied, stitching by machine is begun. Then I spray 2 coats of Scotchguard before  heat- setting a light poly fabric or crepe backed satin on the back.  Getting the edges  square becomes challenging before edging with bias tape.

The hangings are prepared with velcro and a thin stick to mount on the wall.  They certainly may be framed as if a canvas. And dry cleaned.

Smaller views are mounted on recycled cigar boxes using archival medium.
